Public Safety Grants

The Foundation issues one-off grant requests on an “as needed basis,” based on grant applications submitted by the police department. Approvals to these requests are based on whether they meet the Foundation’s established funding priorities and the board of directors have full discretion to approve or deny each request, based on its alignment with these priorities and availability of funding. Our funding priorities are:

  • Equipment and Technology: Technology and state of the art equipment are critical to ensuring our police officers are not outdone by criminal enterprises. In order to stay ahead of crime and ensure public safety, police departments require access to the latest tools. SJPF supports the purchase of specialized equipment that is proven to advance policing.

  • Advanced Training and Education: Police training and education is vital for the growth and effectiveness of the department and its staff. SJPF supports continuous training and educational efforts to best equip the San Jose Police Department officers, reserve officers and civilian staff with progressive strategies and tactics to combat crime and ensure public safety.

  • Community Relations and Outreach: A strong community has a positive relationship with its police department, and a collaborative focus to improve the quality of life for all. SJPF supports projects, activities and programs that continue to enhance community outreach, engagement and awareness between San Jose residents, the business community, and the Police Department.

  • Youth Engagement: SJPF supports events, programs, projects and activities that help police officers build positive relationships with youth. Whether in a school setting or in the broader community, encouraging healthy, positive interactions between youth and police officers can pay dividends in the future.

  • Emergency Preparedness and Counterterrorism: The threat of terrorism and mass shootings is an unfortunate reality in our society. A major earthquake or weather related disaster is also a threat. SJPF supports programs, campaigns and projects that ensure our police department and community are ready for any emergency.

  • Officer Appreciation and Team Building: Recognizing officers for their hard work and commitment to our community improves morale and is the right thing to do. SJPF supports events, award ceremonies and initiatives aimed at supporting SJPD officers.

In addition, the SJPF supports the Gun Buy Back program and the Police Memorial Fund.
